Traffic lights are a crucial part of modern transportation, but their origins go back further than you might expect. The very first traffic light was installed in 1868 in London, outside the British Houses of Parliament. It used gas lamps and had to be manually operated by a police officer. However, the system was short-lived—just a month later, the gas light exploded, injuring the officer on duty.

The first electric traffic signal was introduced in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914, featuring just red and green lights. The yellow light was later added in 1920, giving drivers a warning before the signal changed.

Today, traffic lights are equipped with sensors, timers, and AI-based systems to manage congestion and improve safety. From horse-drawn carriages to self-driving cars, traffic signals have played a vital role in keeping roads organized and efficient.
