Paper clips are one of the most recognizable office supplies, yet their design has remained largely unchanged since the 19th century. But who invented them?
While several designs existed, the most common “Gem” paper clip was patented in 1899 by Norwegian inventor Johan Vaaler. Before this, people used pins, ribbons, or wax seals to keep papers together.
Interestingly, during World War II, Norwegians wore paper clips on their lapels as a symbol of resistance against Nazi occupation, since they represented unity and defiance.
Though small, paper clips have played a surprisingly big role in history, proving that even the simplest inventions can have lasting impact!
