Did you know? Sea otters hold hands while they sleep to avoid drifting apart! This adorable behavior, called “rafting,” helps keep them connected while floating in groups. Sometimes, they even form “rafts” of up to 100 otters! Additionally, sea otters are one of the few animals to use tools, often using rocks to break open shellfish.
Sea otters have the densest fur of any mammal, with up to one million hair follicles per square inch! This thick fur keeps them warm in cold waters because, unlike most marine mammals, sea otters don’t have a layer of blubber. Instead, they rely on their fur and spend a significant amount of time grooming to maintain its insulation.
